Planning Your Shot – Billiards for Beginners
Novice billiard players will often go for the easiest shot without thinking about what the next shot will look like and how to put the cue ball in a good position for the next shot. Setting yourself up for another shot is an important consideration when planning your shot. You will want to think about there the cue ball will end up in relation to the balls you have left, and whether you need to apply english or not.
When you plan your shot, always look ahead to see where the cue ball will land after the shot. If you still have a few balls left to make you want the cue ball to end in a place that will allow you to take another shot. If you have only one shot left before the eight ball look to see where the cue ball will land relative to the eight ball to make sure you will be able to land the last shot. If the cue ball will not land in a favorable position you may want to consider taking the shot a different way.
Once you have decided on the shot you want to take you need to set it up n your mind. The best way to set up a shot is to visualize a straight line from the outside of the object ball to the middle of the pool table pockets. The point where the line touches the edge of the object ball is where you need to hit it with the cue ball to make it go in the direction of the pocket.
After you have visualized the object ball path you have to determine the point on the cue ball that you must strike it to make it hit the object ball in the right place. The cue ball must hit the object ball at the point where the line to the pocket intersects it. Visualize the path the cue ball must travel to hit the object ball precisely at this point. You will want to hit the cue ball where this path intersects it on the outside. Practice these techniques and you’ll be applying english to your shots in no time.
